849 refrigerators were simply given away as part of the Obama stimulus in New Mexico. These give-aways were reported by Colorado Watchdog, which found that states distributed thousands of refrigerators, heaters, water heaters and costly solar water heaters under the banner of “weatherization.” For New Mexico the numbers were 849 refrigerators, 532 heaters and 291 water heaters. “This is nothing more than good old-fashioned vote buying,” said Jon Caldara, president of the free-market think tank The Independence Institute. “I’ve got tons of Coors Light sitting in my garage, and the cold-activation strips haven’t turned blue yet, so where’s my government refrigerator? FDR wouldn’t have the cheek to put forward a scheme like this.” Investigative reporter Todd Shepherd of Colorado Watchdog surveyed New Mexico and other states after learning that thousands of refrigerators were given away in Colorado.
