Jonah Goldberg

Conservative columnist and editor at the National Review Jonah Goldberg spoke to a crowd of about 150 in Albuquerque on Wednesday (June 20) to promote his new book, The Tyranny of Clichés.

He also cracked some one-liners:

*”I’m happier than Helen Thomas at a Hamas rally to be here.”

*[Barack Obama] sees ideology as something other people have.”

*Gandhi never said, ‘violence never solved anything’ to the Nazis. He never said it to the Soviet Union. He only used that argument against the British because he knew it would work on the British … It’s only in good and decent societies that you can have civil disobedience.”

*”Government cannot love you.”

*”A fascist is a conservative who’s winning an argument.”

*”Government is my servant, not my master.”

Goldberg also related the story how Barbra Streisand wrote a letter to the Los Angeles Times cancelling her subscription after the newspaper added him as a columnist: “If I don’t brag about it, who will?”

After his speech, we talked to Goldberg on camera:

The speech was sponsored by the Rio Grande Foundation, which funds Capitol Report New Mexico.

Here’s the entire 54-minute speech Goldberg delivered. There’s one particularly funny moment between the 20:10-22:42 marks:

Helen Tomas was an actual journalist. ‘Doughboy’ Goldberg was merely a chicken-hawk stenographer for the Bush Administration. A real wet blowhard.
