San Juan Generating Plant

Here’s footage of PNM’s power plant New Energy Economy wants to shut down and convert to purely solar power. The camera goes inside the control and turbine rooms of the San Juan Generating Plant, as well as getting close-ups of the steam and other emissions coming from the stacks. After our report that New Energy Economy was misleading the public in its billboards by showing smokestacks not belonging to PNM’s plant, we noted that an advocacy ad in the Sunday Albuquerque Journal used an actual photo of PNM’s plant. But the photo was darkened to make PNM’s plant ominous and threatening. This footage appears to be untouched. This plant provide electricity to 2 million customers and has undergone $320 million in pollution control upgrades.

It’s too bad that Jim Scarantino, in his “reporting” left out the fact that PNM’s failure to have adequate pollution controls at PNM has caused 240 million worth of public health care costs in just the last 5 years alone. It is even worse, that PNM spent $320 million of rate payers money on pollution control upgrades that don’t even begin to meet industry and environmental standards. There was nothing misleading in New Energy Economy’s ad: COAL Hurts! PNM’s energy portfolio mix is pathetic. The reason it has such an abysmal view on Wall Street, despite 41% rate increases, is because of its over-dependence on dirty coal. Imagine if jobs were being created in the solar and wind business. New Mexico has vast renewable energy resources. Why isn’t Jim asking PNM why they haven’t been taking advantage of the business opportunities to develop clean sources, create jobs, and improve their business model? Does Jim think PNM should spend many, more millions in pollution controls that won’t solve the problem of PNM poisoning our air?
