Who’s running against whom in Roundhouse races in November
Print This Post
Now that it’s September, the conventional political wisdom says voters will start focusing on the general election.
They won’t have to focus too hard, though, because in the New Mexico legislature, nearly one-half of the races for seats in the Roundhouse won’t be contested at all in November.
In the House of Representatives, there are 70 total seats in the chamber but 33 candidates will face no challengers this fall (17 Democrats and 16 Republicans can walk on over).
That leaves 37 races up for grabs — and many of those races feature incumbents who are facing opponents who will be decided underdogs.
The House is currently made up of 36 Democrats, 33 Republicans and 1 Independent and the GOP is hoping to win the majority in that chamber for the first time since Dwight Eisenhower was President. But it’s going to be a tough fight and Democratic Party insiders think they can pick up enough seats to give them more of a parlimanetary edge — and neutralize the effects of Rep. Andy Nuñez (I-Hatch), who often votes with Republicans as well as Rep. Sandra Jeff (D-Crownpoint), who has carved out a reputation for being a party maverick.
There are 42 total seats in the state Senate. Of those, 21 candidates will face no challenger in November (14 Democrats and 7 Republicans).
Of the 21 contested seats, just 19 of those seats match a Democrat against a Republican. Two seats match an incumbent against an Independent (Republican Paul Ryan against Joseph Carraro and Democrat Michael Padilla against Robert Schiller).
Democrats currenlty hold a 28-14 advantage. Republicans know they have no chance of winning control of the state Senate but are counting on picking up a handful of seats so that the Democrats’ edge is not so lopsided.
Since we cater to you, the New Mexico political junkies, Capitol Report New Mexico compiled a list of all the seats in the House and the Senate, separated by district so you can see who’s running against whom in November — and who can sit back and relax, knowing they have no opposition:
