Bill Richardson’s Mansion Not For The Little People

In Bill Richardson’s movie, the New Mexico Governor’s mansion is where millionaire movie stars get married.  There’s no place on the set for the citizens of New Mexico who own the mansion and pay the light bills.

Harrison Ford and Calista Flockhart held their nuptials on June 15, 2010, in a location People magazine described as “the grounds of Gov. Bill Richardson’s hilltop mansion.”

But the property doesn’t belong to Bill Richardson.  It belongs to the people of New Mexico.  The 7,949 square foot abode is located in Santa Fe at 1 Mansion Drive.  It’s not exactly situated on a hilltop, though it does have a good view of the Sangre de Cristo and Jemez Mountains.  This is the official residence of the Governor during his time in office.  Like those Governors before him, Richardson will be moving out when his term ends this year.

Governor’s Mansion Not Available For Weddings For New Mexicans

The story about the movie stars tying the knot in the Governor’s mansion got the attention of Jean K. of Albuquerque.  She is the mother of six children.  She asked that her full name not be used in this story.  One of her daughters was looking for a place to hold her wedding ceremony.  Maybe the Governor’s mansion was available.  Maybe Jean K. could use the space on the same terms for which it was made available to the movie stars:  free of charge.  There was no way she could ever afford a site as impressive as the Governor’s mansion for this most special day for daughter.  If people who aren’t even New Mexicans could use the space, why not her daughter?

So she called the Governor’s office to inquire about the availability and terms for using the New Mexico Governor’s Mansion for her daughter’s wedding.  That was a week ago.  The Governor’s office has not returned her call.

So we made a call to the General Services Department, the state agency that cuts the lawn, paints the woodwork, and fixes the plumbing in the Governor’s mansion.  They put us through to the woman who directly oversees management of the property.

Can regular New Mexicans use the Mansion for their weddings?  No.  It is not available.

What about the movie stars having their wedding on the property?  They were personal friends of the Governor.

So it’s not available to this woman who tried calling the Governor’s office?  No, we only make it available to “non-profits.”

We thought to point out that the enterprise of a single woman raising six children was most likely not for profit, but didn’t press the point.

Ford and Flockhart Delay Honeymoon

The newlyweds won’t be rushing off to an exotic island for their honeymoon.  They will remain in New Mexico while Ford completes work on a new film, a fantasy action piece called “Cowboys and Aliens.”

It’s not all fun and games on the set.

According to a source quoted by People, the location of the movie production  “isn’t exactly a romantic hot spot.“  Filming is taking place in a community outside Santa Fe.

“It’s hard up here,” says the source. “There are mosquitoes, and then it’s been hard to get used to the altitude. It’s really quiet here.”

Jean K. and her daughter, in the meantime, continue to search for a site for her wedding.  Jean K.  continues to work in New Mexico.  She’s not complaining.  She loves it here.  She’d just like for her Governor to treat her and other citizens with the same generosity he shows to millionaire movie stars from out of state.

I’ve lived here for over 30 years and have never seen the Governor’s mansion. I think I’ll make a visit in the near future. Maybe I’ll see some frolicking movie stars.

Who is Harry Ford and Calypso Flockhart … never heard of them, but I do know Jean K. We went to different high schools together. ;>)

Seriously, I hope Ms. K’s daughter finds a magnificent wedding location.

    Thanks for the story.

Let’s not forget that Ford and his crew are also getting the film tax credit (or should I say subsidy).

    Jim,
Hollywood celebrities are the American cultural version of British royalty. Celebrities are part of Richardson’s royal family. Like Buckingham Palace and the wedding between Lady Di and Prince Charles, this was a royal wedding event. Of course Jean K’s daughter can’t get married at the royal mansion. She or her daughter are not royalty. They are “subjects” of the monarchy. Hopefully, Jean K knows here place now and won’t be bothering the General Services Department any longer.
