Analyzing the newspaper endorsements around New Mexico

[1]With Election Day looming, a number of newspapers around the state are coming out with their endorsements.

Educated voters and readers know which way the respective editoral boards lean across the state: For example, the Albuquerque Journal [2]opinion leaders lean right and the Santa Fe New Mexican [3] leans left.

In case you’re wondering how things are shaking out this fall, I compiled a list of endorsements from the Journal, the New Mexican, the Las Cruces Sun-News [4]and the Taos News [5]. The Taos News has a small circulation and is not published daily, but it produced a very thorough endorsement list so I included them.

I looked through all the other newspapers in the state that I could find on the web and as far as I could tell, as of Oct. 24, these are the only papers that have made endorsements. If I’m mistaken let me know and I’ll include them.

Here’s the list and at the bottom is the breakdown on which party each publication favored by percentage:

Totals ABQ Journal SF New Mexican LC Sun-News Taos News
25 endorsements 12 endorsements 12 endorsements 9 endorsements
9 Democrats 9 Democrats 9 Democrats 8 Democrats
16 Republicans 3 Republicans 3 Republicans 1 Republican
64% Republican 75% Democrat 75% Democrat 89% Democrat

A couple interesting notes:

First, even though three of the four newspapers tilt towards Democrats, all four publications endorsed Republican Dianna Duran [6]for Secretary of State [7]. Not good news for Democratic incumbent Mary Herrera. [8]

Also, the New Mexican endorsed Republican Jeannette Wallace [9]in District 43, even though she’s getting a real run for her money from Stephanie Richard [10], who one would think has the kind of left-leaning politics the New Mexican would normally embrace.

And in the Public Regulation Commission [11] race in District 4, the conservative Journal endorsed the Democrat (Theresa Becenti-Aguilar) and the liberal New Mexican endorsed the Republican (Gary Montoya).
